Celebrating International Women’s Day

10 March 2011 This year Kabul Municipality celebrated International Women's Day in a different way. Thursday, which is an off day in Kabul, was selected for this purpose. Women were informed about the event in Babur Garden through media announcements. Thousands of women and their families showed up to celebrate this event.

The program started with awards presented to successful and active women in Kabul. Afterwards the women enjoyed live music on a beautiful sunny day and they could also participate in educational programs.
One of these programs was to demonstrate how women can seperate organic waste from household trash. Two practical uses of organic waste was explained. One is to dry vegetable scraps which can be used for fuel in stoves. The other is to compost waste for use as fertilizer in gardens and farms.

Instead of giving bunches of roses to the women, rose bushes were donated as Women's Day gifts to plant in their gardens as keepsakes. This will help to protect the environment and green the city.
I believe women have a major role in keeping the city clean and green. If we educate today’s mothers and girls our next generation will be friends of the environment.
I would like to congratulate all women on International Women’s Day and I'd like to ask them to take a leading role in acting as care takers and protectors of the environment.
